Tesamorelin Research Overview

Last updated:

Tesamorelin is a synthetic analog of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH).

Tesamorelin is different from most compounds in this catalog: it has been studied in human clinical trials and is the active ingredient in an FDA-approved prescription drug product (see below). That approval does not extend to this research-labeled product, which is sold exclusively for laboratory research and is not intended for human administration.

Tesamorelin's published literature spans preclinical growth-hormone-axis research and the clinical development of a separate, FDA-approved prescription drug product:

  • Clinical development history — tesamorelin was evaluated in randomized human clinical trials as part of the drug-development program for the approved prescription product described below; those findings concern that pharmaceutical product, not research-grade material.
  • Growth-hormone-axis research — as a GHRH analog, tesamorelin has also been studied preclinically for its effects on growth-hormone secretion from the pituitary.

Approved Drug Product vs. This Research Reagent

Tesamorelin is the active ingredient in an FDA-approved prescription drug product (marketed as Egrifta). That approval applies only to the approved pharmaceutical product, manufactured and dispensed under prescription -- it does not extend to this or any other research-labeled tesamorelin product. This product is sold exclusively for laboratory research use, is not the approved drug product, and is not intended for human administration.

These are summaries of published research topics, not claims about what this product does, and animal-model findings do not establish an effect in humans.

Limitations

State of the Evidence

Tesamorelin's human clinical evidence comes from the development program for the approved drug product and is specific to that product's formulation and studied population; it does not establish effects outside that program, and none of it applies to unapproved, non-pharmaceutical research material. Preclinical growth-hormone-secretion findings likewise do not by themselves establish a clinical effect.
