MOTS-c Research Overview

Last updated:

MOTS-c is a mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded within the mitochondrial genome, studied as part of a class of regulatory peptides implicated in cellular metabolism.

MOTS-c has no approved human medical indication and has not been evaluated by the FDA or any other regulatory body for safety or efficacy in humans. Published research on MOTS-c is overwhelmingly preclinical: conducted in vitro (cell and tissue culture) or in animal models, primarily rodents. We are not aware of well-controlled human clinical trials establishing a therapeutic effect for any condition.

Published research on MOTS-c is concentrated in metabolic and exercise-physiology models:

  • Metabolic and insulin-sensitivity research — animal models of metabolic dysfunction have investigated MOTS-c's association with glucose regulation and insulin-signaling pathways.
  • Mitochondrial-function research — cell-culture studies have examined MOTS-c's role as a mitochondrial-derived signaling peptide affecting cellular energy metabolism.
  • Exercise-physiology models — animal studies have investigated MOTS-c levels and activity in the context of exercise-induced metabolic adaptation.

These are summaries of published research topics, not claims about what this product does, and animal-model findings do not establish an effect in humans. See References below to search the primary literature directly.

Limitations

State of the Evidence

MOTS-c research is a comparatively young and still-developing literature, concentrated in animal metabolic models and a smaller number of human observational or mechanistic studies; causal, well-controlled human intervention trials are limited.
